Roadblocks & Pep Talks

This post is labeled March 16 because I promised myself (and you!) that I'd update the blog every Wednesday, but I didn't write it or post it until the 17th. I wish I had a great reason or excuse, but the fact is LIFE took over and I forgot.

When I remembered about it this morning I was ready to beat myself up, throw a tantrum, shut down the site- all of the usual tactics I employ when things don't go as planned. Instead I took a deep breath and decided this faux pas would make a perfect write up.

As writers, we should aim to write everyday. There should be a block of time that is solely yours for the explicit purpose of putting words on paper. Thing is, LIFE doesn't care about your plans and schedules.

But it's okay to take a different road once in a while. No one will hate you or kick you out of the Writers Club (yes, I'm a card-carrying member) if you wait until Sunday morning to write. Or if you type it out on your smartphone during your commute. Or if you write phrases on Post-It notes for later use. Or even if you blog something on a Thursday instead of on a Wednesday.

As long as it gets done, you (and I!) will be alright.

When you find that LIFE sneaks in and send you to Milwaukee when you were really trying to get to Palm Beach, be nice to yourself. These things happen. Look in the mirror and sing Prince’s “Cream” to yourself. Really loud. This is something His Purple Majesty suggested during a concert for his Musicology tour.

“You’re the shit. Baby there ain’t nobody better…”

It will all be better. It will all get done. In due time.

Happy Creating!

xoxo,
Raquel Ivelisse
